Council Message: Participation in Local Government

Councilwoman Tish BurokerBy Councilmember Tish Buroker

Greetings fellow residents. What a beautiful fall we have enjoyed. I hope you have all had a chance to walk in your neighborhoods, or on one of the trails we have here in Riverton and relished in the beautiful area in which we live.

You should have received your ballot for City Council members in Districts 3 and 4, and for Mayor. You will notice that myself, councilmember representing District 4, Councilmember McCay, representing District 3, and Mayor Trent Staggs are all running unopposed.  Though there is not a choice in who to vote for on your ballot, Thomas Jefferson provided the correct course of action with these words: “We in America do not have government by the majority – we have government by the majority who participate…All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” Therefore, I encourage you to vote as an active step in government participation. Next, if you are interested in being more involved, please contact your councilmember either by phone, text or email and let them know of your most pressing concerns or to share ideas for the coming four years.

Each year at the mayor’s direction, we meet for a full day of discussion creating a strategic plan for the coming year (the public is invited to observe).  Some of the topics we will discuss, which we would love your feedback on, are as follows: What is your opinion regarding our parks and trails? Do we need more? Should more money be spent to maintain them? How about our roads? Are they well maintained?   What about our storm water system? Is it doing the job where you live? I know in my district there are some areas which would benefit from improved drainage. What about the city’s current IT connectivity. Should we invest in a fiber optic network? These issues and more will continue to engage and challenge your elected officials and city employees.

It continues to be a pleasure to serve. Wishing all of you a wonderful and safe holiday season.
