Christopher Bown assumed office as the Riverton City Justice Court judge on Tuesday, February 7, following his appointment by Mayor Trent Staggs and confirmation by the Riverton City Council.
“Judge Christopher Bown is committed to being a fair, impartial judge as he presides over cases brought before him here in Riverton,” said Staggs. “I am grateful for Judge Bown’s willingness to serve in this capacity.”
Judge Bown has a long history of serving in the justice system and was most recently appointed to the Taylorsville Justice Court in May 2021. Prior to his appointment, he spent 13 years as a deputy district attorney at the Salt Lake County’s District Attorney’s Office and six years as a criminal defense attorney. Judge Bown graduated with a degree in political science from BYU and later received a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Utah Law School.
As the Riverton City Justice Court judge, Judge Bown will preside over the traffic offenses, misdemeanor offenses and civil claims that take place within Riverton. He will also supervise the court clerks and decide the bail status of individuals who are arrested within city limits.
“I am grateful to have been chosen to be the judge in Riverton,” said Judge Bown. “My aspiration as a judge is to make sure people feel like they have been heard and that justice has been done.”
Judge Bown had been serving as the city’s interim judge since August. The position is part-time, so he will continue serving in the same capacity in Taylorsville.
