Riverton City is asking residents to be especially mindful of fireworks laws this year. With temperatures soaring, low humidity, steady wind and the amount of dry grass and brush growing, fire danger is becoming increasingly high.
“As we look forward to celebrating Independence Day and Pioneer Day, we’re asking everyone to remember the fireworks laws and restrictions that are in place,” said Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs.
State law only allows fireworks to be set off from July 2-5 and from July 24-25, unless special permits are issued. Even on those dates, fireworks may only be set off from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The time extends to midnight on both Independence Day and Pioneer Day.
There are areas where fireworks may not be set off, even on the days fireworks are allowed. Unified Fire Authority (UFA) has created a map that shows the restrictions in detail. It is available at unifiedfire.org. In Riverton, the largest restriction includes all areas east of 1300 W, where no fireworks may be set off.
“What we really need is for people to use extreme caution,” said Riverton UFA Battalion Chief Michael White. “It’s important to follow the rules and take the necessary precautions to ensure that fireworks don’t cause fire.”
Governor Gary Herbert just announced a fireworks restriction on state lands this week, due to increasing fire risk.
