Given the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus) across the country and signs that the virus is taking hold in Utah, it’s important for Riverton residents to take critical steps now to help stop the spread of the virus. There is no need to overreact to the situation, but we do encourage everyone take common sense steps to limit the COVID-19 threat.

We encourage all residents to proactively employ these prevention methods, recommended by the CDC:

• Keep hands clean. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid physical contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid mass gatherings of over 100 people. (NOTE: This has since been changed to 10 people.)
• Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, mouth) with unwashed hands.
• Avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public spaces.
• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are frequently touched in your home and place of work.
• Avoid all non-essential travel.

Mayor Trent Staggs issued a directive to Riverton City staff to implement measures to reduce potential spread of COVID-19 at city facilities and events. Part of the directive is the postponement of the Riverton Half Marathon and 4Life 5K originally scheduled for March 28. The city will continue to monitor the situation closely and make changes as necessary to the operation of public facilities or city events and meetings.

Salt Lake County has announced the closure of all libraries, senior centers, and recreation centers, including those in Riverton, effective on Friday, March 13.

Members of the public who believe they may have been exposed to the coronavirus should call the Utah Coronavirus Information Line at 800-456-7707, rather than show up to a hospital or doctor’s office.
