Allowed Accessory Structure Square Footage - December 2020

The Riverton City Council recently amended the Accessory Structures ordinance regarding the total allowed square footage for accessory structures.  The ordinance had restricted the total allowed square footage to 25% of the rear yard area.  That measurement was often difficult to determine, and frequently resulted in different allowances for similarly sized lots.  The City has changed that restriction to 10% of the total lot area.  This means the total allowed square footage for all accessory structures, including pools, cannot exceed 10% of the total lot area.  For example, on a lot where the total lot area is 21,780 square feet (1/2 acre), up to 2,178 square feet of accessory structures would be allowed.  This calculation is much easier to make for those looking to determine what is permitted on their property, as it does not require any measuring of the lot.

Please feel free to contact the Planning Department if there are questions or concerns on this updated ordinance.  You can reach the department at 801-208-3149 or planning@rivertonutah.gov.
